10: Azzura Angeletti

Azzurra and I meet at the heart of San Lorenzo, in the church square, at 11.00. It’s not the first time that we’ve spoken; we met on the set of Ilenia Volpe’s video where Azzurra was the scenographer and I was the photographer, we didn’t speak much, only “hi” and that’s all. Following that we met at a party. in the art studio where Azzurra collaborates, before Christmas, and I asked her if she would like to be part of the project: she said yes so we avoided saying much to each other to avoid ruining the conversation for today.

E’ bello rivederla.

It’s good to see her again. I ask her where we’re going and she explains that nearby there is a bakery/tea-shop called “Bocca di dama”[The Lady’s Mouth] where you can feel really at home: you make your own tea or coffee and select home-made cake (in reality made in the bakery in full-view of the customers). We enter. It’s a really nice place and I like it a lot... I ask for a piece of cake and I discover that they use plastic plates. How sad! For such a beautiful place they really should use porcelain!

Sitting down with tea and cake we start our “real” conversation. We start, but soon I am lost. Not because it’s difficult to understand what she’s telling me but because we move easily from one subject to another – completely different topics – and I can’t find a way to write down my notes in any order. Azzurra’s voice is a little like music, it manages to paint scenes while she speaks, and her words fall softly on my ears. I realise that if we continue like this I won’t have anything that I can write so I start to set fixed points to have a more complete and sequential story.

She tells me that when she was 10 years old she went with her parents to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and she was fascinated by “Primavera” [Sprin] and “Venere” [Venus] by Botticelli. Before that day she didn’t know what she wanted to be: cook, vet, or artist... but after, it was clear: artist. She went to an art high school and really enjoyed it, “I found my environment, the right classmates... my high school days are unforgettable.” After high school she went to the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Roma, graduated, and then work experience. She then returned to Teramo and moved to the countryside, to Castellalto, her grandparents’ town with only a few hundred inhabitants. “I lived there for four years” she explains “and I met an incredible woman there, Angela, from whom I learned various concepts and techniques important to my work. There was a close collaboration between us which began just with a look. However, something was missing; there was always a ‘what if’ inside me...”

One day Azzurra received a call from Dalia, one of her closest friends: “Azz, I need you... could you come and work for me as a babysitter? I thought about whom I could trust and you came to mind immediately.” The work was in Napoli, where Dalia was working on the set of a film. Azzurra accepted: “It was difficult moving around Napoli with a baby of only three months,” she says “I was aware that I had a great responsibility, of trust... during that period I had to give my all to the baby, and ensure that Dalia could remain calm and tranquil... following that, she asked me to go to Montepiano, on the set of another film. So I did just that, but after only two weeks of babysitting, the scenographer asked me if I could do some work so after organising things with Dalia, who was really pleased for me, I found myself in the scenography department working as a scene painter, and when I could, I helped the stage manager to learn everything I could about this work... in that period I met another Azzurra, it was strange because it was like looking in a mirror – physically, eye colour and hair similar to mine, but in life, my opposite. We joked about it and she said that I was the good one and she the bad, I remember her fondly, and with her my “what if” went away...”

They were very intense months, a very important summer, a period of change, with both good times and bad. “I learned that you cannot leave things on hold” she says “and that we must live, never let go of our freedom, and live and let live.”

Perhaps the most important thing was meeting Bruno Melappioni, the Roman artist: “We met in Montepiano. When the summer finished I returned to Rome, not even two days passed before Bruno called me and asked me to visit him in his studio... from that day I began going to the studio and now I’m pursuing my art.”

“I still have lots of things to learn” she continues “and I still don’t know in which direction my life will go: scenographer or artist. This work is very stimulating and sometimes exhausting but very satisfying personally; you always have to be creative to resolve problems that arise. At the end of a project, to understand if it has gone well, you must feel satisfied and full with the knowledge that the next time there will be new problems to face but you will certainly find a solution!” We talk a little about Ilenia’s video and these elements were definitely present. Who knows in which direction life will take us, but in Azzurra’s case, I’m sure that she will find these elements. I sincerely hope that it’s not too long before I again have the pleasure of Azzurra’s company over a cup of tea, to hear the next chapter in her life.
